Poor oral hygiene not only affects teeth but may also cause gum disease. Gum disease is quite common but also preventable.
Healthy gums are firm, pale pink, and fit tightly around the teeth. However, a little discoloration, swelling, bleeding, or any other change may be the result of gum disease. Gum diseases may also lead to other systemic diseases including heart, respiratory, strokes, diabetes, etc.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is gum inflammation, it occurs usually before periodontitis. Early signs of gingivitis are mild and commonly ignored but later this turns out to be bigger problems. In some cases, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis but not necessarily. In the early stages of gingivitis, bacteria build up in plaques and make gums inflamed. Inflammation causes bleeding and irritated gums. However, tissues and bones remain unaffected in this stage.
